It's soylent green! (No, it's just high fructose corn syrup!)

Time for a quick update on my efforts to go HFCS-free. It's unbelievably difficult. This morning I packed a nice healthy salad for lunch. I reached in the fridge for salad dressing, and couldn't find a single one that didn't have HFCS. I'm not surprised that my favorite, Ken's Country French (lite) has it. Or even my next favorite, Russian. But Raspberry Walnut Vinaigrette? Caesar? Italian?!

Why on earth does Italian dressing have HFCS in it?

I went with the vinaigrette because HFCS was about 4th on the list, compared with all the others, where it was usually the first ingredient listed.

And tonight I guess I'll be making my own balsamic and oil dressing ....

The stuff is EVERYWHERE! Check out labels on cereals, even soups! Here's one that you would not suspect: Health Nut bread. Whole grains etc, etc. Fourth ingredient: HFCS!

I know -- it's crazy! Basically anything that's packaged has HFCS in it, no matter how healthy it is otherwise.

And I was just reminded that kosher foods don't have HFCS, so that's always an option.

HFCS has been something i've been trying to remove from my family's diet for a couple years now so i know how hard it is. We've got a new store - Wegman's Market - that has it's own Wegman's brand for quite a few products, their motto on under the Brandname is 'food you can feel good about' - and to my surprise, quite a few of their products use plain old fashioned sugar, yes, some have corn syrup, but HFCS is missing from quite a few ingredient lists - even on some of their sugar cereals! about time!

Judy, That's good to know. We have a Wegman's about 20 minutes away. I went once and was overwhelmed by the cheeses. And it was kinda expensive. But I'll give them another try!
