The dilemma of compact fluorescents

You may have read recently about mercury in compact fluorescent light bulbs. There is concern that the mercury can be released into the environment when the bulbs are disposed of incorrectly. (They should be treated as hazardous waste.)

Grist Magazine has some good information to help you weigh your choices. Basically, the amount of mercury in compact fluorescent light bulbs is still less than the amount of mercury released in the production of energy to provide juice via coal-burning plants for an incandescent bulb.
