Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Senator John Edwards, reiterated her support for GLBT equality at HRC's San Francisco Gala Dinner on Saturday and said that her husband would be a leader on turning over anti-gay discriminatory laws affecting same-sex couples. Edwards also used her speech to decry President Bush's misguided opposition to the hate crimes bill in light of the recent attack of Satendar Singh, a Fijan immigrant and California resident who recently died from injuries sustained during an alleged anti-gay and racist hate crime attack:
"This president talks a lot about good and evil and the need to seek out evil doers," she told a packed auditorium. "But he doesn't seem to recognize the evil in hate crimes. The right to live without the fear of being murdered for whom we love is not a special right."
“We should try to have a more serious and a smaller group,” Edwards is heard to say into Clinton's ear.
Clinton agreed, according to both print reports and video footage. “We've got to cut the number. ... They're not serious.”
Dennis Kucinich may not have much of a shot at winning the Democratic nomination for president, but he is playing a vital role in these debates. He is forcing the front-runners to address important issues that they would rather avoid. Who else among these candidates is calling for impeachment? Repealing the Patriot Act? Universal health care? Gay rights (including the right to marry)?
It is not up to the front runners to decide who speaks to the American public. Maybe Clinton and Edwards have been in contact with the Bush Administration for too long. Some of that “we're better than you” attitude starting to rub off on 'em.
Can we start a petition or something? In the last 48 hours, she has made more sense than all of the other candidates combined. In case you missed it, briefly she has:
Stood up to that harpie Ann Coulter by calling in to the farce that is Hardball, demanding that Coulter stop spewing hate and lies.
Laughed in his face when NBC reporter David Gregory tried to spin Coulter's words away into some "meaningful" points.
I mean, I just love this woman. Maybe she speaks the truth because she is facing cancer and is the only one out there on the stump who understands the importance of truth and justice. Maybe she can teach us all a lesson.
